Herbal Atalantia Ceylanica

Growth Form Spiny shrub to 2m tall

Foliage Leaves ovate or somewhat oblong, 2-4 cm long by 1-2.5cm wide, alternating with sharp spines to 2.5cm long. Mature leaves dull dark green above, light green below, with dark green veins and glandular dots. Juvenile leaves pale reddish brown.


Ethnobotanical Uses

Medicinal (In Sri Lanka, the juice from the leaves is used to make pills for the treatment of bronchitis and other respiratory complaints)

Indigenous medicine in Sri Lanka has introduced it as a plant with very high medicinal properties. Yakinarag has been used by our local doctor since ancient times as a remedy for colds and coughs. It has been revealed that it has been used for epilepsy in children. Here the leaves of the plant are used for colds and whooping cough.

Medicinal elements of Yakinarang - The chemical composition of Yakinarang contains leaves, bark, roots, etc.

The leaves and fruits of the Yakinarang plant have been subjected to chemical analysis for medicinal purposes. Yakinarang fruit contains essential oil, which has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Also, essential oils can be extracted by steaming yakinarang leaves. The essential oils are brown and have a pleasant aroma. The juice extracted from the yakinarang plant is used for coloring.


Medicinal Properties - The anti-depressant and expectorant properties are especially important here.


The primary chemical compound in Atalantia Ceylanica has been identified as "nydroxin ornoticoin". Therefore, Atalantia Ceylanica is used in snake venom.

Yakinarang has been used in medicine for a number of ailments - cold, cough, clothing, fever, loss of appetite, indigestion, diarrhea, paralysis, arthritis, skin diseases, snake venom, etc.

  • Smoking Yakinaran leaves with boiled water and rinsing the face is good for the common cold.

  • Decoction prepared from leaves of Atalantia Ceylanica has been used in traditional medicine in Sri Lanka for the treatment of various liver ailments since ancient times.
Porridge is made by squeezing the juice of yakinarang leaves to ferment the mucus in the cold.


  • Diarrhea - Boil yakinaran leaves and peels in steam and give the squeezed juice to drink.

  • Ardita(oral exacerbation) disease - applying Yakinaran leaf mince paste on the face

  • Applying oil obtained from yakinarang nuts for paralysis and arrhythmias.

  • Snake venom: Yakinarang leaves, chopped with hot salt and heated paste on the bite mouth

  • Meanwhile, yakinarang leaf juice is used for pain, bronchitis and chest ailments.
                        Essential oils of yakinarang fruit - used to treat acute rheumatoid arthritis.



Yakinarang fruit is also used to soothe pituitary gland and the extract taken from Yakinarang leaves is used for itching and other skin ailments.
